Ronald A. Maltony, 89, formerly of Bulger, passed away on Sunday morning May 10, 2026, after a lengthy illness in The Wyngate Senior Living Community, Weirton, WV where he had been a resident for the past year.

He was born on December 12,1936 in Joffre, PA a son of the late Louis and Erma Tagliapietra Maltony.

Ron was an outstanding athlete and 1956 graduate of Union High School in Burgettstown, where he played Offensive guard, fullback and linebacker. He won the WMCK Football Award and was named to the Washington County All-Star Team and honored by the Washington County Optimist Club. A 1956 WPIAL wrestling champion, he was undefeated in his senior year and became the first Burgettstown wrestler to win a PIAA wrestling Championship.

A graduate of Purdue University, he earned his B.S. Degree in Physical Education and Recreation. He was Purdue’s 1958 football sophomore of the year, AP/UPI Lineman of the week, 1959-’60 Notre Dame All Opponent team, 1958-’59-’60 All-Big Ten, 4 time Player of The Week, 1959-’60 Catholic All American, 1960 Playboy All-American, played in the East-West Shrine Game, Hula Bowl and was a Saturday Evening Post All- American. Ron was the 1958 AAU heavyweight-wrestling champion and a Big Ten third place winner at heavyweight.

Drafted in 1961 by the Washington Redskins, Ron played guard & linebacker, then in 1962 played for the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. He was one of the founders of the Lafayette Generals Football Organization, National Amateur Football League in 1972. He was head coach for 5 years and General Manager for 3 years where he led the team to division championships in 1974 and 1975. He was a mentor and coach for countless Little League football, baseball and basketball youth. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

After his football playing career, Ron settled in Lafayette, Indiana, where he began a long career in the food storage and distribution industry. Ron managed facilities and operations for Minardo Brothers Fruit Company, Peter J. Schmitt, Southeast Frozen Foods and Atlas Cold Storage. His career would later take him to Buffalo, NY for 10 years, then Tryon, NC for 20 years, with assignments in Richmond, VA, until his retirement when he settled back in the area of his hometown of Burgettstown, PA. He was a volunteer and member of countless civic organizations.

Although an incredible athlete, Ron’s greatest legacy was his kindness, his mentorship, his steady presence and reliability, his generosity, his humor and his unselfish giving of time, talent and treasure. Known as “Paparoni” to his grandchildren, he loved his family and friends with his whole being. Ron’s spirit lives on through the lives of so many that were positively impacted by his influence.

He is survived by his daughter Candace Lewis of Burgettstown; his stepdaughters Lisa Grobowsky and husband Jay of Tyron, NC and Lori Pickering and husband Bruce of Columbus, NC; grandchildren Victor Alba (Heather), Ciara Pickering-Foote (Brennan), Bailey (Trey) Cherry, Tyler (Nicole) Grobowsky and Sydney Grobowsky; great grandchildren Heidi and Hazel Alba, Jack, Henry, Oliver and William Cherry and Shepard Grobowsky; brothers Rich (Lois) Maltony of Slovan and Tom Maltony of Burgettstown; sister Carol (the late Larry) Keating of Joffre; sister-in-law Kathie Heimburger of Beaufort, SC, many nieces and nephews, many dear friends, especially close friend Sue Bender.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Donna Lascoe Maltony; brothers Bob Maltony (surviving wife Carol) and Ed Maltony and wife Diane; and sister Joan Spiotta and husband John.

To honor Mr. Maltony’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church - Saint Isidore the Farmer Parish, 1112 Main Street, Burgettstown, PA.

The family is very grateful for the care provided to Ron by the staff at Wyngate Senior Living Community and Amedisys Hospice Care.

Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Burgettstown Wrestling Boosters or the Alzheimer’s Association.
