BURGETTSTOWN – Michelle “Shelley” Lynn Matalik Carnes, 53, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, at Cleveland Clinic after a long illness.

Born February 27, 1970 in Washington, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Thomas “Cookie” Matalik and Jeannette “Jean” Saska Matalik. She lived her entire life in Burgettstown, Pa. and was a graduate of Burgettstown High School. Michelle was a Roman Catholic.

She held a BSN degree in nursing from Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio and worked for 10 years at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center.

She married the love of her life, Thomas “Tommy” Carnes on Oct. 30, 1993 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Burgettstown. They recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.

Survivors include her husband of Burgettstown; one son, Coty Carnes, and two daughters Cassandra Carnes and Victoria Carnes, all of Burgettstown; a sister, Tammy Matalik, of Monongahela, Pa.; father-in-law Thomas G. “Tug” Carnes and mother-in-law Patricia Carnes of Canonsburg; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Shelley had unconditional and forever-lasting unbreakable love for Tommy, and their marriage was inspirational to all that knew her. Their souls are forever bonded as one as anyone that knew them would testify.

Shelley never found more joy than being a Mommy to Coty, Cassie and Tori. She home-schooled for several years and found happiness accompanying them to their activities and packing the van with their friends for recreation and fun. She is unbelievably proud of them and their accomplishments, and happy they have kind hearts and caring souls.

Friends remember how welcoming she was, how cozy she made her home, and the wonderful meals she prepared. Shelley was a perfect wife, amazing mother and caring friend. Shelley will be missed so much.

A service celebrating her life is planned for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday April 6, 2024 in Slater Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. of Burgettstown.
