Freda P. Hixenbaugh McClain, peacefully joined her heavenly family on Monday evening September 8, 2025.

She was born on February 24, 1937 in Star City, WV a daughter of the late John and Susanna DeTemple Hixenbaugh.

Freda was a longtime resident of Burgettstown. She spent the past 42 years working at the Super Dollar and Giant Eagle where she was the Union Steward for USCW #23, retiring in 2023.

A charter member of the Burgettstown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, she enjoyed cooking, baking and decorating cakes. She loved to sew and took pride in making her children’s school clothes. Most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and looked forward to summer when she would watch them swimming from her deck. Many family reunions took place, she as the host.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Gerald “Red” McClain, Sr. who passed away on January 3, 1997; daughters Susan and Bonnie; in-laws Stanley and Ivey McClain; sisters Shirley Salvadori (John) of Bulger, Frances “Pug” Zeszutek (Bernie) of Cecil; brothers John Hixenbaugh (Joanne) of West Palm Beach, FL and Frank Hixenbaugh (Jan) of Bethel Park.

Freda is survived by her children Diane of Burgettstown and Jerry and wife Janet of Cherry Valley; grandchildren Nicole (Cuddy) of Cherry Valley, Michelle and Gerri Renee of Avella; step grandson John Mondin (Carter) of Dallas, TX; and a great granddaughter Makayla Romanetti of Avella.

Also surviving are her brother Charles (Patty) Hixenbaugh Hartville, GA; sisters-in-law Marlene Antonetti of Burgettstown, Darlene Shiel of Hopewell, Janice Hixenbaugh of Bethel Park; brother-in-law Dan Yeager of Cincinnati, OH; and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday September 11, 2025 in Slater Funeral & Cremation Services, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021, where services officiated by the Rev. Tom Jones will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday September 12, 2025. She will be laid to rest in the Grandview Cemetery, Florence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Burgettstown Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 426, Burgettstown, PA 15021.
